Social impacts of technology are discussed all the time in media and politics. We hear about it when natural disasters strike, pollution gets out of control, or major catastrophes strike other areas. When politicians debate the merits of new bills, debates sometimes turn ugly. There is a social impact of technology on society on all three levels. This is called the social impact of technology on society or the social impacts of technology.

On a personal level, technologies impact the physical world. This includes everything from the materials people use to build houses, cars, and other tools to the foods they eat. Technological changes also impact directly through social action. Namely, people who own the latest technology feel that their lives are elevated to new heights of status. In fact, there may even be a “new man” or “new woman” on top of the mountain!

Technological change and social impact have an immediate impact on society at large. Technological changes affect individuals and the wider society in particular. The impact is then measured in terms of damages or savings in terms of economic production. The kind of policy changes required in the wake of a social impact of technology may vary by circumstance. For instance, laws may have to be changed to protect the environment. This would have an economic impact on the broader society as a whole, but on the individual level, individuals may feel the pressure to drive environmentally friendly vehicles or take public transit.

Another social impacts of technology is in the realm of communication and socializing. People are spending more time communicating and socializing on their personal phones, Facebook pages, blogs, and other social sites. At the same time, many ways of socializing are being shortened or eliminated as people communicate through texting, instant messaging, and social networking websites such as MySpace and Twitter. The impact on society of this phenomenon is enormous.

There is also a social impacts of technology in terms of business and employment. Technology has made it easier for people to find employment. Previously, when someone wanted to work, they had to hunt down the local employment office and go through an interview process with the company officials. Now, employers can evaluate candidates via social media websites like Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google+ before hiring them. This allows for more accurate and quicker assessments of potential employees’ skill sets, competencies, and potentials.

In addition, there is a significant impact on employment within the retail, hospitality, and tourism industries as well. Retail stores use digital technologies to track their sales and display inventory. Hotel and motel managers use social media websites to interact with guests and to find out what amenities, services, and special deals are currently available.

The fourth social impacts of technology that we will discuss is related to the way that it has impacted society in general. First, many businesses and educational institutions are realizing the social impacts of technology in terms of lower employee productivity and turnover. In response, they are implementing processes and policies that help reduce this loss of productivity. In turn, lower overall worker productivity results in lower pay for the employees, a loss of tax revenue for the government, and lower social benefits for the citizens. These social impacts of technology are being recognized and are being adapted by organizations and schools.

In summary, there are many social impacts of technology in our day-to-day lives. In fact, I would have to say that “the digital society” is slowly becoming a reality. As we continue to implement more technologies, these changes will continue to impact our social networks, work places, and our country.
